FAQs About Tungsten

Tungsten is an increasingly popular choice for a wedding ring. Its durability and sleek color make it stylish and long-lasting. But before you commit to a tungsten ring, here are the answers to a few questions you may have.

FAQs About Tungsten

What Is Tungsten Carbide?

Tungsten carbide is a chemical compound consisting of tungsten and carbon atoms. The result is an incredibly strong metal that is more scratch resistant than any other wedding ring material.

Can Tungsten Rings Get Scratched?

Tungsten rings are durable enough for everyday use and keep their original polish and luster for life. Tungsten carbide can only be scratched or damaged by extreme measures, like abrasion from diamonds or corundum.

That means that you don’t have to worry about taking off your tungsten ring for activities where you would normally remove a conventional wedding band.   However, while tungsten is extremely strong and scratch resistant, it is a bit more brittle than traditional metals used in wedding bands, which means it can shatter or break if impacted.  You should also keep in mind that if tungsten is paired with another metal in a ring, the other metal is still susceptible to scratching.

Can Tungsten Be Resized?

Since tungsten is incredibly durable, it can’t be resized like softer metals. This means that you need to be extra careful when you choose the size of your ring.

Thankfully, since tungsten is much more affordable than precious metals, you can easily replace your ring if it becomes too small or too big.

Can a Tungsten Ring Be Cut Off?

Yes! Cutting a tungsten ring doesn’t pose much more of a challenge than cutting through a gold or platinum wedding band. Jewelry shops usually have a cutting tool designed for cutting titanium and tungsten wedding bands. In addition, tungsten bands can be fractured into pieces using vise-grip pliers. Hospital emergency rooms are also prepared to handle almost anything and would have no problem cutting through a tungsten ring.

Do Tungsten Rings Bend?

Unlike softer metals that get bent out of shape, tungsten rings will hold their shape indefinitely. So if you shut your hand in a car door or drop a heavy object on it, your ring won’t bend and squeeze your finger. In those cases, a tungsten wedding band will much more likely fracture into several pieces and fall off your finger freely.
